Topic #2: Legislation

The repeal of the Kings Dominion Law is one of the major pieces that is being considered in the Legislations. For the past few years, many school divisions issue a waiver to get permission to start school before labor. This waiver is submitted based on the number of days a school division has missed due to inclement weather. Therefore, if the General Assembly approves for schools to be able to start school before Labor Day will be a huge benefit to the students. This would allow the semester to end before winter break and would allow the school year to end shortly after the Standards of Learning testing window.

If this bill is passed, it would allow school divisions to implement a school calendar that is in the best interest of the students, and without having to hope for inclement weather in order to have a waiver approved to start the school year before Labor Day. Also, school divisions would be able to have a set calendar each year and not have to fill out a waiver based on inclement weather closing days to determine the school calendar.
