What does it look like? Will the processes presented (in EDU 715) work for you?
In response to these questions, students were asked to ponder the options of peer review and corrective writing strategies. A practical paper was presented that demonstrated the processes of organization, thinking critically, engaging the audience, review of style and mechanics. Classmates were given the opportunity to read, reflect and analyze this paper based upon the scoring rubric. Discussion followed the review and classmates, using the papers they created in class, demonstrated the use of the scoring rubric.
Classmates, who conduct peer reviews of my work, will provide honest feedback; thereby, increasing my level of success within this course. Yesterday while practicing this strategy in class, I was amazed to find that my writing began to “come alive”. I saw my work through the reader’s eyes and the clarity of my words on paper developed new meaning for me. Many times the sentences did not make sense and needed clarification, a new context, or rewording. I found myself thinking just how “rusty” I had become at the task of creating clear, meaningful written work. I realized that most of what I write is in emails, memos, or short notes to parents and administration. Using the classroom rubrics and practicing peer reviews will assist me as I develop the skills of a more effective writer.
The class also worked on a general five paragraph paper: creating that introduction, that body, and the summary of the paper in the closing paragraph. Most comments from this exercise revolved around the topic of the “length” of papers assigned so far. Direction was given in response to these types of concerns and the class felt reassured that we will be learning various writing strategies to assist in all levels of our profession.
On a very personal note, I am excited to work with my cohort group, to grow and develop those skills that will assist me in my chosen profession. I am fortunate that my cohort has developed a trusting relationship with each other and we welcome the assistance from one other. After all, we are in this together for the long haul!
