14 Leadership Traits

Eric Wright

I stare at this desk calendar every day.  It’s one of those ‘freebies’ the USMC gives out each year.  I scoop it up because it has a large writing area and I can make lots of notes.  I’ve not been very interested about the words that are on it.  The other day, I noticed that it has character traits that are applicable while disciplining students.  The calendar identifies 14 Leadership Traits instilled in every Marine.  These are traits that we all should exude.  They are:
July – Justice – Being fair and consistent.
Aug – Judgement – Thinking about things clearly, calmly and in an orderly fashion so that you can make good decisions.
Sept – Dependability – Being able to be relied on to perform your duty.
Oct – Initiative – Taking action without waiting for orders.
Nov - Decisiveness – Making good decisions without delay.
Dec – Tact – Dealing with people in a way to maintain a good rapport.
Jan – Integrity – Being honest and truthful in what you say and do.
Feb – Endurance – Maintaining the mental and physical stamina to withstand hardship.
Mar – Bearing – Holding your actions to the highest standards.
Apr – Unselfishness – Being considerate.
May – Courage – Remaining calm while recognizing fear. (I really liked this one)
June – Knowledge - Understanding of a science or art.
July – Loyalty – Being devoted.
Aug – Enthusiasm – Having a sincere interest in your job and others.
I was never a Marine, but if they can instill this in each person, I think we should have a much more robust USMC.  Ooh-rah!
