Active Listening

For our Administrative Retreat, we are doing a book study on “The Global Achievement Gap” by Tony Wagner.  There is a chapter on Motivating Today’s Students, which I am really trying to digest.  My son and daughter are constantly plugged into their phones, internet, gaming, etc.  I am trying to utilize my active listening skills and try to take in everything they say and do not say but have body language for a few days.  I’m not complaining about their plugging in, just active listening and watching body language.  It has been amazing to me how much of this book is true about the Net Generation.  They both are able to multitask and react to the world around them so much faster than I can.  I have requested their help on the computer, just to see how many windows are open while they are helping me.  It is continuous.  I wish I had some of these skills, but then I like communicating by talking and listening.
