Career Goals
As I sit this weekend contemplating my career goals, I can either get very excited or very depressed in a hurry! Let me put this in perspective… I woke up at 4:30 AM today to head into Washington, DC for the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure 5K. I was accompanied by my [...]

One’s internal critic often is far harsher than is justified, I have found. My Irish Grandma has a saying that fits your situation nicely: “What is, is best.” Pardon me if I’ve told you this before, and, yes, I find it very hard to live by her philosophy. But you are clearly doing just fine, given the challenges you have faced, and that is the message you carry to those around you. Glad you like the book!
Tammy, First, Happy Birthday. June 10th is special to me because it as my parents’ anniversary. The were married 60 plus years. Are the superintendents you are comparing yourself women? Are their circumstances the same as yours? I think it is hard for us when we look around and see others moving forward and we don’t feel we are. Don’t worry. If you want to, you will. I have worked with women in administration for more than 33 years now and I know it takes us longer. The last study I did on this found that it takes women 10 times the number of interviews than it takes men. And then among women, we have to pay attention to the ways that people critique us based upon our family responsibilities, the ways we look, etc. That’s somewhat true for men too, but not in the same way. I haven’t worked with one woman who wanted to move into administrative positions with more responsibilities who didn’t achieve her goal. Just hang in there. You will make it happen.
