Reflections of the Semester

Sherry Wharton-Carey

Throughout the semester, as we explored Bolman and Deal’s Reframing Organizations, I had an opportunity to analyze my own sense of leadership as it relates to the four frames.  In analyzing my own work styles, I was better able to apply the concepts discussed in class.  I felt that I had a better understanding of my staff, and that they now have a better understanding of me.  It still feels a little strange when I’m faced with a particular issue or concern, and I feel myself trying to determine the specific adaptive challenge and which frame I should utilize to approach the situation.

I certainly have a better understanding of my leadership characteristics, and I’m better equipped to deal with situations as they arise.  While very challenging, I find that combining the concepts of Bolman and Deal along with the process of writing using different styles has been most beneficial and applicable to everyday situations that I face at work.

As I reflect back on the last several weeks, I am a better leader because of the knowledge that I have gained.  Our weeks together have very rewarding, but equally rewarding.
