The recent sex scandal at Penn State has provoked an onset of controversy across the nation. The newly appointed president of university, Rodney Erikson, has stated that in the future, Penn State would not only do what was required by law, but also “what is right”. His statement leads me to believe that many times there are differences between what the law mandates and what is ethically correct.
What is my reaction to this? I’d say that his answer was the most politically correct one that he could actually give at the time. Based on the allegations, the university must present a perception that they will not stand for the same old “business as usual” approach. Penn State stands to lose many potential students due to these allegations. They must in some provide assurances that all individuals are protected under the law…while in the care of the university.
I am truly saddened that we live in a world where some (school) authorities place a higher value on the monetary gains of an athletic program as opposed to the value of children’s lives.
