Meetings, meetings, and more meetings…

RJ Greger

During this time of year, I meet with all of the secondary schools to review their staffing allocation provided from our budget office.  Each year, some schools increase in enrollment while others decrease in enrollment and will cause schools to either need more teachers or reduce their staffing.

The purpose of the meeting is to determine if there will be any teachers impacted by surplus and to see where their hiring needs will be.  If a teacher is impacted by surplus, it is my responsibility to find another location with their endorsement area.  This process includes several policies. One policy is regulatory as the teacher’s licensure and endorsements will determine their potential placement for the following school year.  Another policy is redistributive due to the reduction of class sizes which cause the teacher to be surplused in the first place.

The final step of the process, could potentially include a Reduction in Force (RIF) if there is no vacancy within the teachers endorsement or there is no teacher with less seniority. Several years ago we had the unfortunate need to implement that process.  Thankfully this year the budget seems to be improving and there may not need to move towards RIF.
