Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to meet with Superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools, Dr. Marcus Newsome, and 4th Congressional District Representative, Randy Forbes. Congressman Forbes is currently conducting a “Listening Tour” of his district and took time to meet with three of our teachers, our Principal, and me, to discuss the current state of education. It was interesting to listen to the teachers share their thoughts on the growing list of responsibilities we face as educators. Dr. Newsome shared his thoughts on this matter and brought to the table the “list” created by former executive and author Jamie Vollmer. Vollmer outlines the additional duties that have been put on the plate of teachers and administrators over the past century. After taking a moment to peruse the compilation, Congressman Forbes asked the question, “What, from the list, can be removed?” Interestingly enough, no one had an answer. This made me wonder if we can, if fact, determine which duties fall outside the purview of modern educators. Here is a direct link to Vollmer’s List, in case you are interested:
